Corruption is at an all time high.

By Senator Ed Markey & End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller

Let’s get one thing straight: right now, we have a government of, for, and by the billionaire class—not the people.

While teachers, nurses, and small business owners struggle to get by, politicians in the pocket of dark money special interests are pushing tax cuts for the well connected, millionaires and billionaires.

Working families are being forced to choose between picking up prescriptions or putting food on the kitchen table. Parents can’t afford child care. And young people don’t know if they’ll ever be able to buy a home.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump and his family have made over $2.6 billion since the beginning of his second term, and that’s just the money we know about. All while he rigs the system to make it easier for his wealthy friends to cash in, too.

It’s not even subtle. Just look at who Donald Trump chose to spotlight at his inauguration: Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg. Three of the richest men in the world, now the President of the United States’ most celebrated guests.

We know the system is rigged. Here’s how we fix it:

For decades, too many politicians have put their own interests, and those of their donors, ahead of the people they were elected to serve. And with Donald Trump in the White House, this corruption has reached unprecedented levels.

But we can fix it. The first step is clear: take back the House and Senate and restore a Democratic majority.

And then comes the real test: what we do with that majority. Because we’re not going to fix this system by nibbling around the edges.

We need to overhaul it.

Here’s how we get started:

Overturn Citizens United.

It’s simple. Money isn’t speech. And corporations aren’t people. Let’s stop treating them like it.

It’s been 16 years since the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United decision first threatened our democracy and undercut American’s protections from corporate greed. In the nearly two decades since, dark money special interests have taken hold of our elections and rigged the system against working people.

Super PACS. Corporate Donations. Unlimited campaign contributions. Our democracy has been overrun by dark money.

“Our government is supposed to be about checks and balances, not whoever can write the biggest check.”

We need a constitutional amendment that will overturn Citizens United and make sure that everyone, no matter their zipcode, or their checkbook, has an equal say in our democracy.

Ban Congressional Stock Trading.

Congress is not a get rich quick scheme. But too often, we see members of Congress trading stocks while having access to privileged information, shaping policy, and overseeing the very industries they personally profit from. That’s not just a bad look, it fundamentally erodes trust in our democracy.

How can the American people have confidence that decisions are being made in their best interest and not simply to pad a personal portfolio?

This is about fairness. It is about integrity. And it is about restoring lost faith in an institution meant to serve the people of this country.

It’s time to stop the self-enrichment and get back to a government that actually works for working people.

No More Corporate PAC Money + Get Big Money Out of Politics.

We need a government of the people, not powerful corporations and big money special interests.

For too long, big corporations have paid to play, while every day people struggle to have their voices heard. Lawmakers take checks from corporate PACs and billionaires and then go to work for the very interests who line their pockets instead of those they’re elected to serve.

We should make it impossible for any politician to get elected while in the pocket of greedy corporations and CEO billionaires.

How do we start? Loudly, and clearly demanding: No more corporate PAC money.

Then, we need to bring the financial forces impacting our elections out of the darkness and into the light. Congress must pass the DISCLOSE Act to expose the special interests and billionaires pouring money into races across the country. This is something Congress could immediately take action on to make sure that voters know the truth about who they are supporting.

Return the Power to the people.

These are just the first steps to restoring our democracy and returning the power to the people, not the billionaire class. But none of this is possible if we don’t give the midterm elections everything we’ve got. It’s time to take back the House. Take back the Senate. And get big money out of politics once and for all. Once we kick corporate interests and greedy CEOs to the curb we can finally work to rebuild everything we’ve lost. Only this time, with a fairer system in place, it will last.
